JUNE CONTINUING ED EVENT - Weed ID

June Program: Weed Identification

No matter what kind of garden you have, the most numerous plants in it are likely to be weeds. While you may recognize dozens—maybe even a hundred or more—flowers and vegetables, how many varieties of their competitors can you recognize and name? Do you avoid weeding early in the season because you can’t be sure which of those babies are your seedlings and which are weeds?

Which weeds should you eradicate and which could prove to be beneficial?  The lowly dandelion, for example, is one of the earliest bloomers in the spring providing valuable food for bees.

Our June 7 program aims to help you identify and evaluate each weed. Dig up those weeds you’re wondering about and bring them in. Pot them up any time between now and then or wrap ‘em in damp towels on the 7th. We’ll show you how to use the UW’s on-line Weed ID program tool to identify what you have. You’ll not only learn about what we all bring in, but you’ll be able to use the program for any mystery weeds going forward, so you can figure out how best to control them.  We would encourage you to bring your laptop, tablet or smart phone to the event so we can show you how to use the Internet driven Weed ID tool in real time.

Our association representative to WIMGA, Beverly Feltz, will also talk about what she learned at the April meeting.

Date: Thursday, June 7, 2018

Time: 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Where: Hedberg Public Library, Public Meeting Room (first floor, off the Ground Floor coffee shop)

This is an approved MGV Continuing Education program.  MGVs and Interns will earn 1 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) per hour of participation.
